As a player, understand that you are going to a place where you are going to meet new contacts in life. It may be through Booster programs, alumni, or acquaintances. Think about the fact you may be staying in the area post-graduation. Are you willing to live in that area?

Be patient and open minded when looking at different schools. Don't be quick to decide, look at all options objectively. Consider the academic culture to see what school(s) best fits your needs. Evaluate your scholastic goals and look for schools that are accredited in your field of interest or major. On the athletic side, I would put a lot of thought into the coach to see if you mesh well with their coaching style and philosophy.

The recruiting process for a student-athlete and their family can and should be a enjoyable experience. Having a plan in place prior to the beginning the process will alleviate much of the anxiety. Target a few schools at the Division(s) in which you’re interested in. Your junior year is very important academically and athletically but waiting to get your grades or test scores up until the end of your junior year is a big mistake!
