Who has most influenced your coaching career?
Who has most influenced your coaching career?
Mark Heiser, Girls Basketball Coach
St. Paul Academy
First of all, my Father taught me the value of athletic participation, encouraged me to become a coach, and continues to attend games and support the teams I coach. Secondly, Holy Family Catholic HS Activities Director Matt Thuli hired me for my first coaching job. I learned many valuable lessons about the coaching profession from Coach Thuli, which included more than X’s and O’s and game strategies.
Jerry Diebel, Boys Hockey Coach
North High School
Roy Ward, my 9th grade football coach, balanced demanding excellence from his student-athletes with caring about his players as people. Coach Ward showed me athletics was not about winning at any cost, but it was about competing until the whistle blows. My Dad was also influential as he had great respect for coaches and encouraged me to enter a profession I would enjoy. His advice was to find a job that you look forward going to every day. Twenty seven years later I still love my job.
Troy Russell, Boys Basketball Coach
Arlington High School
Herb Pfiffner was my 8th grade basketball coach at Hospitality House in North Minneapolis. At that time there was a lot of talent in the area and while I was not the biggest kid, he recognized my passion for the game and encouraged me to get into coaching. I started with a Hospitality House team when I was only 17 years old and have been coaching basketball ever since. Herb is still encouraging kids to chase their dreams as he is the executive director of the Union Gospel Mission in Seattle, WA.
Blake Sohn, Wrestling Coach
Orono High School
I have been blessed with many great coaches during my wrestling career but my Father, Dave Sohn, was paramount. He was my high school coach and an amazing technician. He stressed the importance of drilling fundamentals everyday but his greatest gift to me was his ability to inspire... to bring out that "heart of a champion" that we all have within us.
