All the spring sports fight the weather issue. If you are lucky, you have some sort of indoor facility. You can use the weight room and get some swings in, but you can only do so much inside. We try to get things like rules and etiquette covered. Sometimes practicing just to practice in bad weather doesn’t make much sense, so we do what we can and wait for the weather to cooperate.

The biggest challenge that I face with winter and mid-season performance is keeping individual interest and motivation high – having the players do necessary drills and activities that will benefit them in tournaments come mid-April. We are faced with a variety of temperatures and conditions daily in practice and just try to transition those over into our weekend tournaments. There is no off day because of the weather we have through the week. Overall, I try to increase camaraderie between returning players and freshmen early on, so the transition of individual personalities and behaviors will not be as great once the team starts their qualifiers for positions in tournaments.

I believe most programs would prefer having pleasant playing conditions from the start of tryouts to the conclusion of the season, but it is not reality. Some good can be obtained by braving the elements early on because more than likely, inclement weather will be present on the days of some matches. The players will have had some experience in the cold and wet and know what they’re in for and be able to adjust.

The biggest challenge early in the season is the weather. Because the weather is usually cold, rain or snow, the ground is soft and our (driving) range is not usually open. Sounds like a lot of excuses, but every team faces these challenges. We do not put very much emphasis on April matches. Once the weather warms, we are able to spend a lot of time on the range and work on various things.
