After intense training over winter break, what is the next step toward peak performance? As a coach, what do you stress to your swimmers toward the end of January, heading into championship meets?
Jim Todd
Center Grove
After the winter break, we start to focus more on stroke mechanics. We also start doing more sprinting. We will gradually reduce our overall yardage until two weeks from the start of the sectional tournament. At that point we hit the taper hard.

At HSE, we stress technique, balance, and walls throughout the year, but especially after high volume training. In addition, athletes must perform in workouts. The race strategy that is used and the technical aspects (starts, turns, and exchanges) performed during workout will usually surface again in actual races. HSE swimmers and divers know that and will actively strive for perfect execution during workouts.
Duane Swisher
Western Boone
We work very hard over winter break. When we return on Jan. 8, our conference meet is two days after from its start (Jan. 10 and 12). I stress being focused, staying healthy and to look forward to the payoff of all the hard work.
Chris Plumb
Carmel
At Carmel, we stress the importance of racing with confidence that you received from the several months of challenging training, focusing on the things that you need to do to swim well, and having fun and enjoying the experience.
