HSSTM asks area swimming coaches, “Now that fall sports have ended, what is the biggest challenge athletes face when they move from one sport to another? Is it conditioning and stamina? Are winter sports more physically challenging?
HSSTM asks area swimming coaches, “Now that fall sports have ended, what is the biggest challenge athletes face when they move from one sport to another? Is it conditioning and stamina? Are winter sports more physically challenging?
Bob Heist
Governor Mifflin Boys/Girls Swimming
“Moving from water polo to swimming, there are some obvious advantages and disadvantages. The advantage is that you are in the water so your muscles are in tune with working in water. With swimming you can’t sub someone in and out during a meet, so swimmers have to be in peak physical condition. It’s a very long season no matter which sport you play. It is not only a physical transition but a mental one as well.
Jim Burkman
Schuylkill Valley Boys/Girls Swimming
"There is no other sport that can simulate swimming except water polo which we currently do not have. Although the athlete may be in great physical condition to play football, soccer, volleyball, or whatever their fall sport may be, they are not in great physical condition to swim. Being a top level swimmer requires being in the pool constantly or they will lose not only their conditioning, but their technique as well."
Julie McCarthy
Muhlenberg Girls Swimming
“The biggest challenge athletes face is finding the self motivation and positive mental attitude to dedicate themselves to another sport. In order to get in swimming shape, you need to be swimming. I also think adjusting to the differences between coaches from one season to the next is another big challenge.”
Walter Holt
Wyomissing Boys/Girls Swimming
“Many multi-sport athletes, based on their fitness levels, need to re-focus and set new goals (individual, team, and training). Because of the amount of time swimmers spend in the pool, they need to keep mentally and physically fit throughout the entire season.”
