Are you a coach that likes to have your lineup set fairly early, or the type that likes to let the girls play it out on the court until the end of the regular season? What is your insight into developing your best possibly lineup at the best possible time?

I think it is a good combination of both, setting a good early lineup while also allowing ladies to play it out to the end. For doubles, I feel it is important to build a team early so they can learn to work together with their strengths and weaknesses. As for singles, it really is a toss-up to me. I believe it also depends on your players each year and what talent you have. If you do not have much talent, you really need almost the whole season to see what is going to work best. If you have a very talented group, the players really seem to fall right into place without much work from the coach.

I would always allow people to challenge at any time. In fact, I believe that doubles teams can get snippy with each other as the season goes on, so my preference is not to put together our ultimate No. 1 doubles team until after a couple weeks of competition. There are, however, some conferences where the conference tournament seeding virtually forces a coach to keep players in one position all season.

I like to have a tentative lineup the first part of the season, but some of that comes from knowing your players and their abilities. There will always be changes to the lineup at certain positions. I think for the most part those changes usually occur at the lower end of the lineup because the younger players are progressing at a faster rate than those who have come close to reaching their high school potential.

My lineup is always temporary until the City Tournament and sectionals. The season is for us to learn who the best players are for the tournaments. To determine this I watch all close matches. I want to know who plays well under pressure and who folds. The kids that play well under pressure will play the top spots in the tournaments.
