How many and what are the most important pitches a pitcher should have in his arsenal on the high school level?
|
Floyd Scott Nathan Hale High School |
 | I believe a high school pitcher needs three different pitches. The first pitch needs to be a controlled fast ball, being able to spot the ball inside and outside is very important. The second pitch is a curve ball or slider, which ever pitch is working best that day. Having a good curve ball keeps the batters off-balanced. The third pitch needs to be a good change-up. Look at Greg Maddux, doesn't overpower batters with a good fast ball, but mixes in with good off speeds to keep the batters off-balanced. |

 | We like our pitchers to have three different pitches at the high school level. The best pitch in baseball is strike one, it's that simple. |

Bill Fisher Sperry High School |
 | "As a high school coach, I feel like the number of different kinds of pitches thrown isn't as important as teaching pitchers about location. I teach my pitchers to throw three basic pitches: fastball, curve, and a change-up. Hitting is timing and pitching is destroying timing. If you can't throw strikes and change speed of your pitches, you are not going to be successful as a pitcher." |

David Warburton Cascia Hall High School |
 | A pitcher needs to be able to throw whatever pitches he has in his arsenal for strikes and the best pitch he has is throwing a first pitch strike. To be able to get ahead in the count is paramount. A pitcher needs to be able to throw a fastball and an off-speed pitch at the minimum to be affective. Ultimately, you would like for a pitcher to have three pitches he can throw affectively for strikes. |
