What is one of the most important traits you commonly find in your most successful student-athletes, and why do you think this makes such a difference in their performance?
Vic Brodt
Roseville girls hockey coach
Student-athletes that truly enjoy what they are playing typically perform consistently at a high level. No matter what the sport, student-athletes that are passionate about their sport continue to improve. I believe this is true because their passion is not only evident in their games, but in their practices as well. This trait is often called desire, competitiveness and drive. Mix this with some natural ability, and the sky is the limit. Find what you truly enjoy. Find your passion!
Lenny Vannelli
Breck School girls hockey coach
The most successful student-athletes are highly competitive. As individuals, they set goals for themselves and put 110 percent effort into the work they do to attain them. As a member of a team, they maintain a positive attitude and selflessly pull more than their weight for the group as a whole. They are leaders because their work ethic is infectious. And most importantly, they don't rely solely on their talent to take them where they want to go.
Jeff Lagoo
South St. Paul boys hockey coach
An athlete's ability to deal with adversity in a positive way and learn from their failures is extremely important to their future success. All athletes will experience failure at some point and to achieve success, they are going to have to solve problems. If they react positively to them, they will be stronger and better than ever. The more situations our athletes are put in and the way they learn from those adverse situations can only be beneficial for them. That's one of the major reasons I like the multi-sport athlete verses the one-sport athlete, and I feel they are some of our most successful student-athletes we work with.
Doug Svihel
Totino-Grace wrestling coach
The mental toughness and the drive to succeed. The competitiveness they have, whether it’s wanting to always face the best, or the work ethic in the practice room to always strive to attain the highest level. My most successful athletes will sacrifice temporary pleasures in order to attain the goals that they have set. The mental toughness it takes to push yourself to make that difference is what sets the most successful athletes apart from the rest.
