How do you keep your players motivated to think positive and consider themselves winners even when they miss a point or if the team loses a game?
Hernando Planells
Hopewell Academy/ Athletic Director
First we tell the players to move on from the loss or a missed basket... but learn from it and that together we will find ways to get better. Second, as a coaching staff we emphasize positive energy and attitude 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Third, we talk daily about the A. B. C's of our program -Attitude, Balance and Confidence- and how it pertains to their daily life. By instilling this culture of positive thinking and action we are teaching them how to "bounce back" from events that will happen on and off the court.
Steve Efird
Raleigh Charter High School/ Athletic Director
As competitors, we obviously never want to lose. As a coach, it is also important to consider the context of a loss and look at how hard your team played. How much effort did we give in trying to accomplish the team's goals and how much improvement did we make from the game before? In some situations, we may play at high level, mentally and physically, and still come up short on the scoreboard. Or, we may make repeated mental and physical errors that need immediate correction. The most important dynamic of any successful team, whether they win or lose, is that they show up the next practice ready to put in the effort it takes to get better.
John Wells
Lady Elite AAu Team Women's Basketball Coach
Immediately after that loss is the perfect time for a teaching moment for your team. A team should address the real problem (rebounding, free throws, bad defensive rotation or turnovers are the usually culprits). A coach should allow some extra time in his next practice to work on the fundamental deficiency. A coach should also make sure the team talks through the importance of improving on the fundamental deficiency. After the team buys in it should become more efficient. A coach should display his confidence in his team by keeping the same lineup and not belittling his players. A simple pat on the back or telling your team "I believe in you" goes a long way.
Lauren Nosal
Panther Creek High School/ Swimmong Coach
Swimming is a unique sport in that each athlete competes individually, yet we are still a team. A swimmer can have the best race of their life and still not win. When this happens and an athlete is discouraged I have them focus on the positives that came out of their race. What did they learn? What can they improve upon in the future? I also give them credit if they gave their best effort. Finally, we look forward to the next race. If they are upset that they lost, I advise them to take it out on the pool, not themselves and put that extra emotion into swimming fast.
