It’s important to get 100-200 swings per day for muscle memory and hopefully they are taking good swings. We utilize tee work and soft toss mostly breaking down different parts of the swing. We try to get rid of bad habits outside of the cage so batting practice can be more productive.

Hitting a baseball can become very technical and get you thinking about everything from which way your toes are pointing to how high your hands are. Having good hand-eye coordination and fundamentals are important, but I want to focus on the mental side. Creating a good approach is critical when ahead or even in the count. Know your pitch, look for your pitch, and hit your pitch. Being aggressive on your pitch and working on improving hand-eye coordination are two ways to become a better hitter.

It takes understanding the proper physical mechanics as well as an understanding of the strategic, emotional and mental approaches to the game. Then it takes repetitions keeping in mind that if you’re not doing it right, you’re doing it wrong. A few common reminders we have to make are to move individual components of their bodies, snap the barrel to and through the zone and allow the wrists to make a circle with the barrel of the bat after contact.

To become a better hitter at the high school level means a lot of drill work and a lot of attention to detail. The batting tee needs to be the foundation for any good young hitter to continuously improve. This work needs to begin long before the season starts and should continue throughout the year.
