How do you determine which holiday tournaments your team will enter?

Dwight Bransford Boys' Basketball - Doss High School |
 | First of all, like most coaches I want our kids to play in the most prestigious tournaments available. This allows for us to play against high level teams who have marquee players. Also, playing in these tournaments provides good exposure for our kids. Last, we want to play in tournaments that we can be very competitive in and maybe have a strong chance of winning. During the holiday break, I like to play in tournaments outside of Louisville just to give the kids a change of scenery. It relaxes them and gives them an opportunity to draw closer together. Furthermore, it gives us a chance to play against teams that we would not play during the regular season. I consider the holiday tournament games to be more like "test tube" games. We may try different player combinations, offenses and defenses. This may help us later in the season when we need to make game adjustments. |

Ron Ferch Assumption High School |
 | We will always try and enter the top state tournaments around the holiday season. We are going to the Lexington Catholic Tournament in mid December. Going forward, we will travel out of state during the holidays as often as possible. With me being new at Assumption, I have a different thought on how to pick what tournaments we enter. I gather a list of possible tournaments for the following season and let our juniors and their parents decide where they want to go. The kids and the parents work very hard at fundraising and this is a way to give them some input as to what we do. Next year, look for the Assumption Rockets to be in Orlando, Naples, Phoenix, or San Diego. |

Chris Renner Boys' Basketball - Ballard High School |
 | I prefer to play in one in-state tournament and one out-of-state tournament. For the in-state tournament I generally prefer playing in the King of the Bluegrass. This tournament offers the best competition around and our expenses are minimal. If I play in the K.O.B. I like to start out playing the out-of-state teams.
As for out-of-state tournaments, we generally accept the best offer. In my ten years at Ballard, we have traveled to Myrtle Beach; Bristol, TN; Phoenix; Fort Myers; Ocala, FL; Rock Hill, SC; Lewes, DE; Daytona Beach and Chantilly, VA. Many of these tournaments cover a large portion of the travel expenses. These tournaments also offer national level competition. The most important benefit to traveling out-of-state is that it allows our players the opportunity to travel to places they might never have been or may never get to go. |

Steve Sergeant Boys' Basketball - Seneca High Shool |
 | When I consider holiday tournaments for Seneca boys’ basketball, I consider proximity and affordability. When I have a budget in mind, I try to find a good fit for the team. I always would consider the King of the Bluegrass and the Fifth Third at Lexington Catholic as the elite at holiday time. Kentucky is blessed with high quality holiday tournaments. |
