Basketball season doesn’t start until the end of November, but October is a big month, too. That’s when practices get going all over the state. We asked a few area coaches what their favorite part of the season is. Here’s what they had to say:
Shane Cowherd
Edmond Memorial boys coach
It’s the chance to be able to get your hands dirty with the kids and implement new wrinkles that will help your team be successful. October is fresh air for basketball. By the time we hit October, we’re certain who will be wearing the jersey and getting after it. The kids get tired of the weight room, so they want to get out there, too and see how they stack up.
Matilda Mossman
Norman girls coach
I think just the assembling of the different talents and personalities and implanting things. You get a feel for what your success level might be in the next three months. October is about teaching. I love teaching. Our practice time is our teaching time. That’s exciting.
Brian Lester
former Heritage Hall boys coach
Oct. 1 was always the best part of the season for me. The electricity in the air was amazing. Walking into that first practice and hearing the basketballs bouncing was an indescribable feeling. I just loved how hard the kids worked. Everyone in the gym at that time was ready to conquer the world. This is the time of the year each team believes they are going to win a state championship. That type of feeling just created the perfect atmosphere.
Chad Campbell
John Marshall boys coach
For me, it’s two things. The anticipation of getting started is great. You get all the guys together and that renewed desire to get ready to make a run. But I like it because there’s always new kids you might not have got to work with before. You get to see some young men who show up and surprise you. I look forward to see who’s ready to come out and get after it.
