A lot is often made of home field advantage in sports. VYPE wanted to know how big of an advantage it is at the high school level, so we asked some area coaches. Here were some of their responses:

There is a certain “comfort zone” you feel at home, but the great teams win on the road regardless. It’s kind of like the movie “Hoosiers,” when they measure the height of the basketball goal just to assure the kids it is no different than home. I’ve been involved with teams that actually played better on the road than at home.

Playing home serves as an advantage because you become comfortable in familiar surroundings. The student body support is more evident at a home game because of the younger students who do not drive. Also, there are not the travel procedures involved that can vary from time to time. I think it is important enough to flip [for home-field advantage] in playoff situations when the opportunity arises.

Successful programs learn to play well whether at home or away, but yes you should have a small advantage at home. First of all, you usually have more fans at home, creating more excitement. When you have more students at the game, this seems to fire our players up. I believe when your peers are there you have a tendency to play just a little bit harder and sometimes that makes the difference in winning or losing.

I think if there is an advantage it lies in the fact your fans can be there. Some people travel for away games, but not nearly the same as a home match/game. That enthusiasm and excitement for high schoolers sometimes is a catalyst for momentum. It is their comfort zone…their locker room/game preparation is exactly the same on home games and can need modification in other gyms. Sometimes other teams fans can get them out of their zone in an away facility and can make it difficult to focus like they normally would. Other than that, a volleyball court is 30x30 on your side and everyone’s net is the same height.
