My most memorable moment coaching was when a player had graduated from high school and came back for a game to tell me the impact Sanderson Basketball had on her life. She said she may not have graduated if not for our program and the coaches. It confirmed to me the importance of the job coaches do. It is important that athletes learn lifelong lessons such as dedication, discipline, and excellence in everything they do not just with the sport. As I coach, I have the chance to make life long relationships with every athlete. It’s the greatest feeling when they return to say thank you for making a difference.

When I took over as the head coach at Sanderson High School, I had a committed group of kids with a ton of heart and dedication--the problem was, there were only nine of them total, and Sanderson had not won a match in years. That year, we fought hard but finished dead last in the conference. Through the recruiting efforts of a great coaching staff and group of young men, we started the next year with 30 guys on the team, and it has only grown since. Offering year-round opportunities to get on the mat, the wrestlers improved greatly, and last year we finished the season with a 20-4 dual record and won the regular season conference championship with three state qualifiers and two state placers (2nd and 3rd). With over 50 young men coming out for the team this year, our hope is to defend the title and compete at the state level

First, tennis is such an individual sport. As a coach, I work on developing the team concept, to get the girls look beyond themselves and understand that they have teammates and they represent their school. A great moment was when we played a match against the 2007 state champions from Charlotte, and we won that match. I watched those girls storm the courts, and our number one player, Kristen Kohagen, led the charge. I focus on teamwork, and it means so much to those girls who play the last court and are able to look out and see their teammates and friends cheering for them, really wanting them to win.
