Mustang's blocked extra point give the Broncos a 30-29 upset of Norman North.
There will be a new top-ranked team in Class 6A, and there might be a few more teams on the West side of the state who have a chance to win the state title this year. That all happened because Mustang upset top-ranked Norman North 30-29 on Thursday night in Norman.
Norman North was considered by many to be the best team on the West side of the state and the top contendor to unseat the East side dominance in 6A. But Mustang changed all that with a thrilling victory after holding off a furious Timberwolves rally in the fourth quarter. Mustang remained unbeaten at 6-0 while Norman North dropped to 5-1.
Mustang dominated Norman North for nearly three quarters, leading 30-7 midway through the third quarter. But Norman North battled back. The Timberwolves trailed 30-14 at the end of the third quarter, and then clawed their way back in the fourth quarter. They collected a safety and then scored a touchdown to close within 30-23. Norman North then got the ball back with a little less than four minutes remaining in the game. Norman North quarterback Tyler Tettleton drove the offense down the field and threw about a 35-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Nyko Symonde with 1:23 left in the game to close within 30-29.
It looked like the Timberwolves would tie the score with the extra point. But several Mustang players broke through the Norman North offensive line and blocked the extra point. Mustang recovered the onside kick and ran out the time to collect the big upset.
With the win, Mustang threw its name in the debate about who the best team on the West side of the state is and if there are any teams that will be able to challenge the East side teams. If second-ranked Midwest City beats Lawton Eisenhower on Friday night, then most likely the Bombers will move into the top ranked spot in the VYPE 6A rankings.
