The Importance of Staying Hydrated
As summer begins and preparations for fall sports are underway, athletes and exercise enthusiasts alike need to keep rehydration and recovery foremost on their minds.
During exercise the body sweats and loses the electrolytes it needs to maintain normal function. Sweating is the body’s ability to cool itself in order to maintain a constant temperature. It also utilizes energy stores that allow muscles to contract and relax, and allows muscles and the nervous system to learn new skills.
An athlete’s potential is dependent on how the body recovers from various activities and even competition. Maximizing the body’s recovery allows the athlete to gain the advantage of being bigger, faster, and stronger. While nutrition and rest are the most important aspects of recovery, rehydration is one area that always needs to have constant attention.
There are rules to remember while exercising: Rest, rehydration and nutrition.
The optimal time to begin recovery is the 30-45 minutes after workout when the body is searching for the rehydration and nutrition to replenish fluids and energy. It is also important to begin workouts well-hydrated. As athletes workout through the summer months and pay attention to the amount and types of fluid, food and sleep they take in, they will be more successful in performance and have fewer injuries. Again, remember Performance, Rehydrate, and Recovery are the basis for success.
