Boys
Who won: (6A) Edmond Memorial, (5A) Tulsa Washington, (4A) Cascia Hall

How it happened:

Edmond Memorial – The Bulldogs finished a perfect season in a perfect way, capturing the 6A state championship with a 1-0 victory over Norman North in a shootout. The Bulldogs beat the Timberwolves 5-4 in penalty kicks to win their second state championship and their first in 14 years. It was Memorial’s fourth victory this year by shootout as the team finished the season 15-0.

Who starred:

Steven Darnell, Edmond Memorial – The goalkeeper was stellar all season (12 shutouts and four goals allowed) for the undefeated state champions and finished it up with a fine performance in the state title game against Norman North. He had eight saves, including the lone block of a penalty kick in a shootout to give the Bulldogs the state championship.

Corey Albertson, Norman North – The senior forward led 6A in scoring with a school-record 27 goals and helped the Timberwolves finish runner-up in 6A.

Braden McCaleb, Edmond Memorial – The senior forward led the Bulldogs in goals (10) and assists (7) to lead the team the state championship.

Kalen Ryden, Norman North – He was one of the best defenders in the state. He also came up crucial. He scored the game-winning goal in double overtime in the 6A semifinals to help the Timberwolves beat Tulsa Union 1-0. He then played well in the state championship loss to Edmond Memorial.

Kevin Cabello, Putnam City North – The sophomore has scored some impressive goals for the Panthers this season. He is just one of a large group of underclassmen for Putnam North, which will be one of the favorites to win the 6A state title next year.

Rudy Vargas, Northwest Classen – The senior made the 5A All-State team. He helped NW Classen advance to the 5A state semifinals. He had a couple crucial goals in the playoffs.

Zane Hamilton, Deer Creek – One of the best scorers in the state, the senior helped the Antlers to the 5A state semifinals before losing in the semifinals. He made 5A All-State team.

Taylor Frost, Oklahoma Christian School – The senior helped OCS finish runner-up in 4A, losing to three-time state champion Cascia Hall in the title game. Frost, who is an All-State selection, scored a goal and an assist in the semifinals to help his team advance to the title game. OCS finished 13-6 this season.

Bryan Byers, Putnam City North; Jack Coleman, Norman North; Boyd Okwuonu, Edmond Santa Fe; Santiago Preciado, Santa Fe South; Hunter Smith, Mustang; Kevin Cabello, Putnam City North; Donald Mendoza, Norman.



Girls Soccer

Who won: (6A) Tulsa Union, (5A) Bishop Kelley, (4A) Bishop McGuinness

How it happened:

Bishop McGuinness – The Fighting Irish won their first ever state championship, beating Tulsa Metro Christian 4-1 in the finals. They trailed 1-0 early, tied it before halftime and scored three second half goals to win the title. McGuinness, which dropped a class to 4A this year, finished the season 13-3 with all three losses coming early in the season.


Who starred:

Jacquelyn Elmer, Bishop McGuinness – Scored school record 35 goals a year ago and followed that up her senior year with crucial goals all season, especially in the state championship game. She scored two goals in the state title game.

Amy Grow, Deer Creek – The junior has already scored over 150 goals in her career. She scored nearly 35 goals this season to help the Antlers to the 5A semifinals. She has verbally committed to Kansas.

Madi Hillis, Edmond Memorial – The sophomore helped build the Bulldogs program to a power again and led them to the 6A state semifinals before losing to eventual state champion Tulsa Union. Memorial finished 11-4.

Megan Watkins, Edmond Memorial – She had nearly half of the team’s goals this season, collecting 22 of the team’s 47 goals. She and teammate Madi Hillis formed a dynamic offensive duo.

Cat Rawls, Heritage Hall – shined this season. She scored two goals in the first round of the playoffs and added two goals and an assist in a quarterfinal win before team lost in the semifinals.

Julie Johnson, Edmond North – After taking two years away from soccer to concentrate on track, Johnson returned with a vengeance. The senior forward scored 26 goals this season to help the Huskies finish runner-up in 6A for the third straight year. They lost to Tulsa Union in the title game for the second straight year.

Abby Hodgen, Mustang – The freshman was one of the main reasons Mustang had a surprisingly strong season. She is one of several talented players for the Broncos. She scored the game-winning goal with 25 seconds remaining in the quarterfinal win over Edmond Santa Fe, helping the Broncos reach the 6A semifinals.

Kelly Springstead, Chickasha – The senior forward was one of the most dangerous playmakers on the field this season. She once scored eight goals in one game this season. She has signed to play for UCO.

Brittni Walker, Carl Albert – The sophomore is one of the best players on the Titans and helped her team advanced to the 5A semifinals before losing to Tulsa Washington. She scored five goals in one game this season.

Amy Grow, Deer Creek; Brittney King, Edmond Santa Fe; Madi Hillis, Edmond Memorial; Calli Cooper, Norman North; Cat Rawls, heritage Hall; Taylor Robinson, Heritage Hall; Lauren Parks, Edmond North; Abby Hodgen, Mustang
