Girls Track
Teams champions: (6A) Midwest City, (5A) Tulsa East Central, (4A) Bishop McGuinness, (3A) Vian, (2A) Watonga, (A) Okeene.
How they did it:
Midwest City – A year after the boy’s team won a track title, the girl’s team matched them this year. The Bombers excelled on the track, using their superior speed to collect 117 points and run away from the competition. They won most of the short runs and the relay runs as well. The runner-up was Edmond Santa Fe with 82 points.
Bishop McGuinness – The Fighting Irish won just one event, but had enough consistent top-five finishes to beat out runner-up Northeast 76-72 to win the title.
Watonga – The team easily won the Class 2A team title with 106.33 points, beating its nearest competitor Hennessey by more than 22 points. Watonga did it by winning the 1,600 and 3,200-meter relays, 300-meter hurdles, the discus throw and the shot put.
Bomber Magic:
Carissa Levingston, Midwest City – She broke three state records, including one in the preliminaries, and collected four gold medals in 6A. She broke her mom’s record in the 100-meter dash in the preliminaries and followed that up by breaking her own record a day later in the finals with a time of 11.57 seconds. She also broke her own record in the 200-meter dash she set last year, winning with a time of 23.69 seconds. She also helped her team win gold in the 400 and 1,600 meter relay teams.
Gabrielle Jackson, Midwest City – Jackson won the 6A 400-meter dash with a time of 57.04 seconds. She also helped the Bombers win the 800 and 1,600-meter relay events. She finished second in the high jump.
Welcome newcomer:
Takoya Simpkins, Northeast – Oklahoma got introduced to one of the best runners in the state currently and for the next three years. The freshman captured four gold medals, two individual and two with relay teams. Simpkins won the 100 and 200- meter runs while also helping Northeast capture the 400 and 800-meter relay events.
Making a statement:
Kristen Mays, Amber Pocasset – She jumped clear of the competition in the 2A high jump, beating her nearest competitor by over a foot. She cleared 17-feet, 5-inches. It was her second straight high jump title.
Lanisha Medicine Bear, Watonga – She showed that she can throw a long ways, capturing the 2A shot put and discus throw titles.
Tyler Henderson, Heritage Hall – She won the 3A high jump in an upset, beating the favorite Krista Beaty by two feet. Henderson had a leap of 5-feet, 4 inches to capture first.
Molly Ferguson, Bishop McGuinness – The senior went out in style. Ferguson, who is one of the best long distance runners the state the past four years, won the 3,200-meter run at 11 minutes, 51.28 seconds.
Who starred:
Consuela Richardson, Carl Albert – She beat four competitors by two feet to win first place in the 5A high jump. She cleared 5-foot, 2-inches to win the title.
Shannon Cahill, Watonga – She captured the 2A 300-meter hurdles with a time of 47.35 seconds. She also helped her team capture the 1,600-meter relays.
Evan Shimanek, Hennessey – She captured the 2A pole vault by a foot with a vault of 10-feet.
Aspen Marical, Tuttle – She won the 4A 100 meter hurdles in a time of 15.68 seconds.
Kristen Sides, Weatherford – She won the 300-meter hurdles in 4A in 46.20 seconds.
Latisha Jacobs, Western Heights – Jacobs won the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.01 seconds in 5A. She also finished third in the 200-meters.
Hillarie Kessler, Deer Creek – She captured first place in 5A in the 1,600-meter run with a time of 5-minutes, 29.15 seconds. She also finished second in the 3,200-meter run.
Madeline Murrell, Duncan – She dominated on the hurdle events, capturing first in 5 in the 100 and 300-meter hurdles.
Sasha King, Norman – Known more as a reliable point guard on the basketball team, King also showed her talent in track. She won the 300-meter hurdles at 45.32 seconds, winning by nearly two seconds.
Toni Young, Del City – She won the 6A high jump title with a jump of 5-feet, 4-inches, winning by nearly two inches.
Kylie Cooper, Edmond North – She won the pole vault in 6A with a clearance of 9-feet, 9-inches.
Constance Ezugha, Edmond Santa Fe – Ezugha captured first place in 6A in the long jump with a leap of 19-feet, 4.50-inches, winning by nearly two feet. She also finished second in the 200-meter dash.
Jackie Stevens, Putnam City – She won the 6A shot put with a heave of 41-feet, 4.50-inches.
One story you might have missed:
Watonga ended Coalgate’s four-year state title run in Class 2A. The last time a team other than Coalgate captured the 2A state title was in 2003 when Watonga won it.
Boys Track
Team champions: (6A) Tulsa Union, (5A) Tulsa East Central, (4A) Douglass, (3A) Millwood, (2A) Hobart, (A) Sharon-Mutual.
How they did it:
Douglass – The Trojans shined on the sprints, individually and in the relay teams, to win by nearly 30 points with an overall point total of 76. It is Douglass’ first title since 2006.
Millwood – The Falcons had a rare off year on the track, not winning as many competitions as usual. But they still captured the 3A state championship, just beating out Plainview 68-62. Millwood won a state title for the second straight year.
Who starred:
Michael Ervin, Millwood – He kept of the high standard on the track for the Falcons program, capturing the 3A 100-meter dash and finishing second in the 200-meters. He was the lone Millwood athlete to win first place in a competition this year.
Justin Taylor, Jones – He won first place in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.25 seconds in 3A.
Chris Hunt, Jones – He captured the 3A 300-meter hurdles with a time of 39.91 seconds.
Omari Blair, Southeast – Blair finished first in the 4A 100-meter dash after finishing second a year ago. He ran a time of 10.88 seconds. He also collected a second place finish in the 200-meters.
Ben Plank, Bethany – He captured the 110-meter hurdles in 4A with a time of 15.48 seconds.
Treven Loken, Weatherford – Loken won the 4A discus throw at 148-feet, 8-inches.
Casy Rowell, Duncan – He captured the 5A pole vault title 14-feet, 6-inches, beating his nearest competitor by six inches.
Derrick Krautlarger, Moore – He won the 6A 110-meter hurdles by one second with a time of 14.33 seconds.
Nathaniel Winfrey, Stillwater – He captured first in the 6A 300-meter hurdles with a time of 38.35 seconds.
Alex Madkins, Midwest City – He won two events in 6A. He captured first place in the high jump and the long jump.
Cameron Tabor, Norman – He shined in his two events in 6A track. He won the shot put and discus throw events.
Jack Whitt, Norman North – He dominated the competition in the 6A pole vault. He won with a clearance of 16-feet, 7-inches. The nearest competitor cleared just 15-feet.
Can’t catch me:
Ds’Shor Horton, Douglass – He beat defending 200-meter champion Omari Blair of Southeast and won with a time of 22.18 seconds. He also won the 400-meters at 49.04 seconds. He won two first place finishes on relay teams as well, with the 400 and 1,600-meter relay teams.
Dustin Mettler, Duncan – No one could handle him on the long distance runs. Mettler won the 800, 1,600 and 3,200-meter runs in 5A.
Football stars equal track standouts:
Donte Foster, Guthrie – What a year it was for Foster, one of the best athletes in the state. He helped win a 5A football and basketball title this past year and ended it by winning a gold medal in the high jump. He jumped 6-feet, 6-inches to win.
John Flanders, Midwest City – He is one of the fastest players in the state, whether it’s on the football field or the track. He displayed that by winning the 400-meter dash at 48.25 seconds. He also helped the Bombers win the 1,600-meter relays.
Kris Parham, Bishop McGuinness – Parham showed that he not only can run, which he did plenty on the football field this past year, he can also jump. He captured the 4A long jump title with a leap of 21-feet, 9.25-inches.
Brett Davis, Shawnee – He showed his football skill on the track as well. He won the 5A 300-meter hurdles and finished second in the 110-meter hurdles.
Josh Birmingham, Luther – He showed his football speed on the track as well. Birmingham, who is a standout on the football team, won the 2A 100-meter dash with a time of 11.67 seconds.
One story you might have missed:
The Oklahoma City public schools have a long tradition of excellence on the track. But this year is the first time since 1956 that two Oklahoma City schools won a team state championship in the same year. Millwood and Douglass captured state titles this season. It is the first time since Northwest Classen and Capitol Hill won track titles in 1956.
