Who won:
Boys: (5A) Tulsa Union, (4A) Bishop Kelley, (3A) Cascia Hall
Girls: (5A) Jenks, (4A) Bishop Kelley, (3A) Bishop McGuinness
How it happened:
Bishop McGuinness – There was no surprise that the McGuinness girl’s tennis program won another state championship. Make it 10 state title in a row for the powerhouse program. The Fighting Irish did it in dominating fashion, winning all its matches – No. 1 1 and 2 in singles and the No. 1 and 2 in doubles. It is the second straight year McGuinness swept all four divisions.
McGuinness domination:
Peta Lancaster – She was unstoppable in her two positions she played -- the No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles. In singles, she beat Julie Laberthe of Heritage Hall 6-2, 6-3.
Whitney Ritchie and Mia Lancester – McGuinness’ top doubles team beat Heritage Hall’s Carissa Villaflore and Maggie Knooihuizen – 6-0, 6-0. Ritchie also won a doubles title last year with the Fighting Irish.
Katelyn Connelly – The junior gave up her No. 1 singles position this season after winning the state title last year. Connelly still ended up with a state championship, but this year she did it at the No. 2 singles position. She beat Nicole Helsted of Heritage Hall in straight sets 6-2, 6-2.
Ashley Chiaf and Emily Conrad – The teammates combined at the No. 2 doubles position to beat Heritage Hall’s Becca Arnold and Sarah Gretsch 6-0, 6-1. It’s the second straight state title for Conrad in doubles action.
Duncan performance:
Haley Hartzell and Taylor Spradlin – The two teamed up to win the No. 2 doubles position in 4A by beating Bishop Kelley’s Courtney Bowens and Julia Miggins, the only position Bishop Kelley not win. They both helped Duncan to a second-place finish to Bishop Kelley.
Samanthan Street and Melanie Barnes – The two finished runner-up in their respective singles divisions. Barnes finished second at No. 1 singles while Street did the same at the No. 2 singles position.
Who starred:
Cassi Carver, Putnam City North – It took awhile for Carver to pick up another state championship, but she ended her high school career in fine fashion. Carver, who won No. singles as a freshman, captured the No. 1 singles division in 5A in a come-from-behind, tough match against Rachel Mitcham of Edmond North. Carver rebounded from losing the first set 4-6 to win the final two sets 6-4, 6-4. She helped Putnam North finished second to Jenks.
Caleb Villaflor and Justin Wise, Heritage Hall – in No. 1 doubles play beat Cascia Hall’s James Adams and Andrew Fields in a thrilling three set match. The Heritage Hall pair came back from losing the first set 5-7 to win the final two sets 7-5 and 6-4. They were the lone team to win and prevent Cascia Hall from winning all four divisions.
Story to know:
If it wasn’t for Bishop McGuinness, Heritage Hall would be the one celebrating a Class 3A state title. The Chargers placed second in all four divisions to McGuinness. It would have been fun to see how McGuinness and Bishop Kelley and Cascia Hall would have fared against one another in girl’s action since they both dominated their classes. Also, four of the six team state champions are private school
