Summer is almost here so it’s time for parents to start lining up their kids’ activities. If your son or daughter likes golf and seems interested in attending a junior golf camp here are a few suggestions to help you pick the right one.
1) If you are a member of a country club, most likely your club offers a summer golf camp for juniors. If you are not, there are plenty of public golf courses like KickingBird Golf Club who offer camps.
2) Find out what skill level the camp is designed for. Most junior golf camps like KickingBird’s EC Hafer Junior Golf Program are set up to introduce juniors to the game and mainly cover the fundamentals. I recommend beginners and intermediate Golfers only for our camps. Most college golf team camps like Oklahoma State are designed for more serious aspiring junior golfers.
3) Ask about the student-teacher ratio. In our EC Hafer camp, we limit classes to eight students per instructor. Any more than that, and you are dealing with controlled chaos. It is important to know your child will be getting some type of one-on-one instruction during each session.
4) Ask who the instructors will be. We use our assistant golf professionals and ex-college players and college coaches. It is very important that adequate supervision is being offered so that safety is emphasized at all times. Also, you would like for the teachers to have a good understanding of the golf swing and its fundamentals.
5) Find out how long each instructional session is. Our sessions last 1 hour because we have found that juniors, just getting introduced to the game, lose interest after that.
6) Find out if clubs are provided.
7) Find out if there are any additional activities that go along with the camp. We have an end of the summer Long Drive and Putting Contest and tournament for all of our EC Hafer participants. Some courses offer similar activities, and it is certainly worth asking if there are any additional privileges offered.
It is very important for parents to get their junior started with the right fundamentals. Start them out with a junior golf camp, then work them into individual lessons with a PGA professional.
