The girl's soccer teams at Norman North and Edmond Santa Fe each are adjusting after some challenging experiences. Norman North is now the best team in Norman for the first time ever. Santa Fe lost its best player and one of the best players in the country after Catilin Mooney decided not to play high school soccer anymore.

Towering Timberwolves

The Norman North girl’s soccer team in no longer the second best team in Norman.

It’s the best. The Timberwolves beat rival Norman High twice in a matter of weeks in March. It’s the first time in school history Norman North has beaten the Tigers twice in a season. North won 4-1 on March 13 and followed that up with a 1-0 win in the third place game of the Sooner Showcase. The Timberwolves had never beaten Norman twice in a season since the school opened in 1997.

“It’s very satisfying,” North coach Jay Coleman said. “It’s a pretty big deal to us because Norman is such a great program. After the second game, the girls got a banner that read “Beat the Tigers.” We took a picture in front of it. It’s a great accomplishment to remember.”

It was a record setting series for the Timberwolves against their rivals. The four goals North scored in the March 13th win was also the most they have ever scored against Norman. North had never scored more than two goals in a game against Norman.

“We played awesome that game,” Coleman said. “To do something that had never been done before against our rivals means a lot.”

No more for Mooney

Soccer standout Caitlin Mooney has chosen not to play high school soccer anymore. Mooney, a junior, played several games with Edmond Santa Fe this season, but decided to concentrate on club soccer.

“I just had too many things going on,” Mooney said. “And I wanted to put more of my time into helping my club team win regionals and nationals.”

Mooney plays for the Edmond Soccer Club 1990 Black team, one of the best club teams in the country. It will be a big blow to Santa Fe. Mooney is one of the best players in the state and in the country. She has played for both the Under-17 and 18 U.S. Women’s National Teams.

“I’ll miss some aspects of high school soccer,” Mooney said. “But I want to put more of my energy on club.”
