Maize enters the Class 6A state tournament behind ace pitcher and leading batter, Garrett Gould. For more on Gould, see "Gould-en Arm" in the March issue of Vype. Maize, at 19-2, split during the regular season with Goddard, the 6A tourney's top seed. Maize starts against Olathe Northwest, Goddard against Olathe South.
Maize also lost to Blue Valley at the end of the season, 12-7, a game in which Gould four earned runs in five innings pitched. Blue Valley, at 17-4, is the No. 5 seed in the tourney. Here is the 6A bracket.
Mulvane, 17-4, reached the Class 4A state tournament by winning one of the state's most difficult regionals. Six of eight teams had winning records. Mulvane defeated previously once-beaten Independent to reach state. As the four seed, they lead off against Ottawa in the opening round. Here is the 4A bracket.
Andover Central and Kapaun represent the area at Class 5A state. Kapaun, at 13-8, is writing a bit of a cinderella story, but this is their third consecutive appearance at state. Kapaun placed third in 2007 and second in 2008. Andover Central reaches the 5A state tournament a year after going undefeated in 4A until losing in the regional final. Here is the 5A bracket.
