VYPE Games of the Week on KAKE 10's Good Morning Kansas

It’s the west Wichita rivalry. Carroll has dominated Northwest in recent years, and with their campuses only a mile from each other, it's not hard to overhear the winner exercising his bragging rights all year long. If Northwest needs any more fuel added to the fire for tonight's match-up, how about this: They were beaten 26-0 in the second half of last year's game. In fact, Northwest didn't score again after putting up 14 on their first three plays of the game. If only they could keep up that pace.

Long before Bryce Brown was trucking over defenders for Tennessee on national television, Brown ran wild against Dodge on ESPN in 2007. East followed up that 21-0 victory at Dodge with a 45-14 win last fall. Now Brown's gone, and tonight’s game at Dodge City will have a different tone for East. The Aces better be ready after Dodge smashed Southeast 26-3 last week. If Dodge puts up a big number on East tonight, you can bet that for the first time since the early 1990s the Demons will be a contender in the 6A playoffs this November.

Now for a couple quick hits. Andale hosts Winfield a week after scoring 7 touchdowns against Clearwater. Winfield, though, ended Andale's 29-game win streak in last year's match-up. Wellington hosts Andover Central after scoring 61 points against Kingman last week. And Buhler travels to Abilene a week after compiling 649 yards of offense in their opener against Andover. Buhler's Jorden Oden ran for 330 yards on just 22 carries on his own. Wow.

Andale

Buhler

Finally, my game of the week, Salina Central at Derby. A missed Central extra point in the first half was the difference a year ago in Derby's 28-27 win. But gone are Derby's stars of that game, and back is Salina Central's Cale Sharp, bearer of a last name we all know. Sharp scored three touchdowns in last year’s game as a sophomore. How much better is Salina Central from its 5-5 finish last season; And can Derby repeat its 10-win season from 2008? When these two clash tonight, we’ll know where these two titan programs stand in ’09.
