Coming off her freshman season, everybody knew Ashia Woods would be the team leader. But did we expect this? Wichita Collegiate knocked off Andover Central a week into the 2008-2009 season 55-48, ending the Jaguars undefeated streak which began last season with their undefeated run to the 4A state title. Woods, their star sophomore, scored 39 points in the game, posting up, shooting three-pointers and going coast to coast for lay-ups after steals and blocks on the defensive end. Woods was the most talented player for the Spartans last season, as they placed third at 3A state, but after a summer of AAU ball, she is playing on another level. She's tougher, stronger and more forceful. She may be the best this area has to offer. Her long arms are a constant threat on defense, and it will be hard to find anyone in 3A to guard her. The only team which is clearly better than Collegiate is Heights. The Spartans could play with anyone else in the City League, if they had too. They have two teams to chase in 3A, though, No. 1 Rock Creek and defending state champ, No. 2 Riley County.
