The Kansas Wrestling Coaches Association has released its team and individual rankings for the Class 6A, 5A, 4A and 3-2-1A. The high school wrestling season begins with the first tournaments of the season on Saturday. Goddard, led by senior three-time champs Boaz Beard and Tyler Caldwell, is ranked No. 1 in Class 6A. The Lions won 6A state titles in 2006 and last season in 2008. In addition to Beard (171) and Caldwell (152) being ranked No. 1 individually, Mitchell Means, a state runner-up last season, is top-ranked at 145 pounds. Senior Ryan Houlden (160) and Josh Hicks (215) are ranked No. 2 individually in 6A. Also in 6A, Derby is ranked No. 2 as a team, Wichita Heights third. Heights returns three individual state champs - sophomore Daniel Deshazer (125), senior Kendric Maple (140) and senior Chase Nelson (160). Derby has no wrestler ranked No. 1 individually and returns no state champs, but is very deep once again. Senior Jack Wenzell of Wichita North is ranked No. 1 at 112 pounds, and Trent Cox, a two-time state champ at Andale, moves to Maize for his senior season. If Cox hadn't been sick during state as a sophomore, he might have been going for four titles this winter. Wichita Northwest touts two returning champs in the upper weights - juniors Kyle Caylor (215) and Brock Heithaus (285).
