Not since the introduction of Class 6A in 1978 has a Class 5A football program won more than two consecutive state football titles. Hutchinson, entering its second season in 5A, seeks its second state title in the classification. They are the odds-on favorite to do so.
It is interesting to note, however, that if Hutch retains its 5A classification after realignment for the 2010 season, history judges that this will be their final title in consecutive seasons. Class 5A has hosted a plethora of outstanding programs over the past three decades – so many, in fact, that the task of winning three straight titles has been unattainable.
Marvin Diener made Salina Central great (6 titles: 1993, 1996, 1999, 2001, 2002, 2005); Ken Stonebraker at Salina South in combination with Diener at Central made the city of Salina legendary (2 titles: 2000, 2004). Steve Rampy at Blue Valley Stilwell got his, too (4 titles: 1991, 1998, 2003, 2006). Gary Cornelson, who returns to Kansas as his son’s assistant at Hays this season, fielded some of Kansas’ greatest teams at Liberal (4 title: 1992, 1994, 1995, 1997).
But none won three in a row.
So, have hope, member schools of Class 5A. –TW
