Bishop Carroll may not have been as well-known for their cheer squad in previous years, but the 2008-2009 troop is already proving to be different.

In their ready to flip, fly and tumble yellow getups, these girls verified they were nothing short of prepared; after an exciting and work-filled summer, it’s easy to understand why.

The Carroll girls began their trek toward excellence when they attended the UCA Cheer Camp at Emporia State University this summer, whence they came home with a truckload of hardware.

Their awards included: Top Team Award, Most Improved, the Spirit Award and the Leadership Award, which all squads (400-plus girls), voted on.

“This year, we’ve worked really hard. We’ve come a long way and the leadership award meant a lot,” said senior Jenna Simpson.

The Lady Eagles also collected the Spirit Stick every day of the camp with their show of teamwork and zest, as seniors Alyssa Northcutt and Becky Ast, junior Megan Walden and freshman Tory Freeman represented by making the all-star team.

“We’ve never done this well at a large camp before. They work so hard,” coach Susan Crum said.

Crum is joined by coach Becky Hamilton, as they take on their first year of coaching together. It’s apparent they’ve had a significant hand in developing the program and motivating the girls.

“Susan pushes us harder and believes in us. She wants us to push past our limits,” said senior Mary Toon.

Captains senior Northcutt and junior Walden have taken part in and seen first-hand the continued growth and makeover this squad has undergone. From beginning to end, Northcutt has witnessed the change over a four-year span.

“Over the last four years, this program has gotten deeper with more experience and more returning girls. It has developed, and I think we’ve improved a lot,” said the senior captain.

Camp, and the recognition that came from hard work, has set the standard for the Lady Eagles. From each of the girls to the coach, this squad has come full circle as they ride the high of their continuous efforts and much-earned progress.

“We have so many overachievers,” Crum said.

Thanks to ready-to-work girls and success-driven coaches, this is no longer a rebuilding year…this is THE year
