Central Kansas, KS

Wednesday, August 13, 2008

In 2008, Smith Center continues its sprint to the top of the Kansas prep record books. Coming off their fourth straight 2-1A state title, the Redmen take a 54-game winning streak into the fall. With seven state titles in school history, Smith Center is three away from tying Lawrence for the state record (10). The Redmen are one title win from tying Lawrence and Midway for a record five consecutive titles, and one undefeated season from tying Pittsburg Colgan for most all-time (7) and one from passing Colgan (2000-03) and Conway Springs (2001-04) for most consecutive. An undefeated run to the state title game in 2008 would also gain the Redmen the longest winning streak in state history (currently Pittsburg Colgan, 66, 2000-04). Hutchinson's four-year title run in 6A ends this fall, but their presence in the record books could enhance. A fifth consecutive state title for the Salthawks in 2008, this time in 5A, would also tie them with Lawrence and Midway for the state record.
