The Andale and Garden Plain football programs have a tradition-rich history, though it does not necessarily involve one another. The two schools haven't faced off since 1969, but over the course of the 40-year hiatus, the programs have developed into perennial state title contenders. Both teams are in very similar situations entering the 2008 season. Andale lost 22 seniors from a year ago and they only return two starters from last year's squad. Junior offensive tackle B.J. Finney returns for the Indians, but the key returner for Andale is senior Corey Harp. Harp has been a mainstay at outside linebacker for the Indians since his sophomore year. Harp also spent a large amount of time at fullback with more than 50 carries in 2007. He is the only starter remaining from Andale's two consecutive state championship teams and its 28-game win-streak. Harp expects to see a lot of time at tailback this season in addition to his linebacker post. Coach Gary O'Hair said there are many athletes ready to fill the void left for this season. Seniors Jake Jones, Gavin Scheer, and Jerod Weninger all expect to contribute on defense. Offensively, Andale will be led by senior quarterback Michael Eck. Garden Plain lost the majority of its starters, as well, after the departure of a large senior class. Junior Jake Puetz shared time with Logan Dold at quarterback last season, and he will take over the role this season. Again, Garden Plain has one very key returner back this season - senior Daniel Capul. Like Harp, he started at linebacker and fullback last season, ending second on the team in rushing yardage. Capul suffered a season-ending injury just before the state championship game last fall, but he should be fully recovered this year. Both squads have been left with a considerably bare cupboard after last season, but at programs like these there are 80-plus kids who are trying out to replace the seniors who have departed. Also, many players have seen a large amount of varsity playing time in blowout wins over the past two seasons, so coaches are confident that they will find suitable replacements for a successful season.
