The tournament, held at Eck Stadium, concluded last Sunday when Oklahoma Baseball took the title

"With two semifinals before a championship game, somebody's going to have to play in back-to-back games and it just happened to be us," said head coach Darrel Young. "Two games in a row in 100-plus degree temperatures on that carpet at Eck Stadium is just too much."

Pastime Tournaments hosted the Great Plains Tournament of Champions last weekend at Eck Stadium on the campus of Wichita State University. The stiff pool of competition included the Kansas City Bombers, which was the top-ranked team coming out of pool play, the Sioux Falls Cyclones, and the eventual champions, Oklahoma Baseball.

The top teams in Wichita included the Wichita Reds, Wichita Sand Gnats and the Midwest Wolverines. Members of the Wolverines include Maize's Garrett Gould and Jake Marasco, Andover Central's Ben French, and Bishop Carroll's Jake Cole.

The Wolverines 18s went undefeated in pool play by giving up only seven runs in three games. After pool play, teams were re-seeded and placed into a 22-team bracket. The Wolverines won a No. 4-seed and proceeded through the bracket on their way to the championship game.

"With two semifinals before a championship game, somebody's going to have to play in back-to-back games and it just happened to be us," said Wolverines coach Darrel Young. "Two games in a row in 100-plus degree temperatures on that carpet at Eck Stadium is just too much."

Overall, Young was very happy with his team's performance, despite a 4-3 loss to Oklahoma Baseball in the championship game.

"For not playing in two weeks, we played very well," said Young. "We had great performaces from our pitching staff this weekend and good offensive performances out of guys like Ryan Hege and Jake Marasco. We had our chance to win."

Since its inception in 1993, the Wolverines have produced many college and major league prospects including Brian Burgamy, Mike Dennison, Mark McBratney and Eli Rumler. Lead by head coach and founder, Young, the Wolverines have 18-under and 17-under teams that compete nearly every weekend of the summer. This weekend they will compete in the Best of the Southwest Tournament in Stillwater, Oklahoma.

Gould, a incoming senior at Maize, has opted to sit out his senior year of football to concentrate on preparing for the continuation of his baseball career. The pitcher wields a 95-mph fastball and is rising up professional baseball draft boards for next year. This month, he was among the final 34 players to try out for the 18-under Team USA before getting cut. Gould was one of the top passing quarterbacks in the area in 2007.
