Casey Lassley is a sophomore catcher and shortstop at Wichita South. He hit .520 as a freshman and is looking to improve on those numbers this season. Lassley has become a familiar last name in Wichita athletic circles. Cody, Casey’s older brother, is a sophomore catcher at Wichita State University and Megan, his older sister, is a senior at South and has signed to play basketball at Barton Community College in Great Bend.
KDK: How did you get started in baseball? What people have influenced your playing career the most?
Casey Lassley: I was about five years old when I got started. I played tee ball and my dad coached me. He started me out, taught me a lot of things, and just took me under his wing. My brother (Cody) and my grandpa also helped me out and got me started playing baseball. My dad (Randy Lassley) has influenced my playing career the most. He has taught me everything about catching and hitting. I go to him for help, and he tells me what I’m doing wrong.
KDK: You come from a very athletic family. Do you feel any pressure following Cody and Megan? What kind of relationship do you have with your siblings?
Casey Lassley: I feel a little bit of pressure, but I just really want to do things right. I want to carry on that Lassley name. My brother comes to my games when he doesn’t have a game, and Megan too. We always help and support each other. My brother and I go hitting together, so we are pretty tight.
KDK: Do you have aspirations to play baseball beyond high school? College? Pro?
Casey Lassley: We will see how it all works out, but I would love to play college. And professional baseball would be just one of those on-the-spot type deals that you don’t plan on. I’ve thought a little bit about how it would be to play with Cody at Wichita State, but not a lot. That would be fun.
KDK: Who is your favorite individual athlete and team (college and/or pro)? Why?
Casey Lassley: I would have to say my brother, Cody. I just love watching him play and hearing about what he has done. He is my role model. I just want to be like him in every way.
The New York Yankees are my favorite team. They are known as winners, even though they haven’t done it for a while. The Yankees have been my favorite for a long time.
