Alarm clock
This might be the most important tool that any incoming freshman can have. A good alarm clock with a good snooze feature will become very beneficial. As a general rule, the more annoying that the tone is, the better. A good alarm clock is especially necessary for those students that have 8 a.m. classes (everyone will at some point). In addition, the college life is so hectic, that naps are essential to survive.

Food
Face it: college students keep the strangest hours. All night cram sessions, early mornings, and no bed time cause students to adapt and make due. Because of these odd hours, students will get those hunger cravings when the cafeteria or student unions are not open. To beat this problem, keep an endless supply of ramen noodles, cereal and granola bars on hand. But make sure you hide them; you don't want others getting into your stash.

Fan
Dorms are notorious for being way too hot and having the heaters on when it's absolutely not necessary. Be prepared to regulate your own temperature and always be comfortable. Plus, it's a great way to drown out your snoring roommate.

DUCT TAPE
This is just a basic necessity that you must have for the rest of your life. Duct tape can fix anything: a busted water bottle, a notebook, one of those expensive textbooks, and anything else that needs to be patched up or sealed shut. Also, it's a great tool for hanging up those "high school memory" pictures. Plus, you never know when a good dorm prank might call for MacGyver's best friend.

Basic Cleaning Supplies
Spills happen. Germs are everywhere. You never know who lived in your new pad before you, and you don't know when the last time your room has been thoroughly cleaned. A can of disinfectant spray and a case of disinfecting wipes should be sufficient enough. Additionally, by regularly cleaning with these supplies, you can really help yourself from getting sick and you can stop the spread of those nasty viruses that are floating around dorms.
