The Kansas Football Coaches Association put five proposals before the Kansas State High School Activities Association this past spring regarding rule changes. They are: (1) The allowance of using shoulder pads and helmets at the high schools’ summer camps, now called coaches camps; (2) The allowance of using just helmets at those camps; (3) Changing the official status of the coach’s camp to the school’s camp in order to obtain the school’s insurance coverage for the camp; (4) Allowing preseason jamborees or scrimmages between two to four teams during the week before fall competition begins; (5) Not limiting the number of players who can suit up for playoff games. If you could make any rule change for high school football in the state of Kansas, what would it be?

We should be able to wear helmets and shoulder pads for our team camp (at school) and the first practice of the season. In our team camps, several athletes have suffered head injuries. Players running routes and running into each other is one example of where non-contact drills have resulted in head injuries. The state association has always said that the athletes need three days to get in shape before we wear pads. I feel that in this day and age, the athletes are conditioning year-round more than ever. Our athletes are ready to be in full pads the first day of practice. I also feel that the state is listening to the coaches association. We would like more changes, but they have made some positive changes for high school football in Kansas, for example: allowing our athletes to wear our own equipment at team camps (at colleges) and giving us week-long camp (at school) in the summer.

The state needs to change its rule which limits involvement between coaches and players at summer team camps at colleges. They need to allow coaches to coach their kids at these camps because others are already doing it anyway. I would find a way to take my team to camp if the rule was changed. As the rule currently stands, I will not go to team camp and coach my kids as long as it is illegal. If it was legal, I would start pushing the camp in the winter. I would tell my kids to go get jobs, this is how much money you’re going to need, and as soon as you get it saved up, give it to me, and I’ll hold on to it until camp. But we don’t have that. They say you can’t coach your kids, but guys are coaching their kids, and the state isn’t doing anything about it.

We should allow pre-season jamboree scrimmages. If we were allowed to scrimmage other teams, it would give the players and fans something to look forward to a week earlier, and, more importantly, it would give teams a chance to evaluate their personnel in a more realistic setting than what we currently have. A very close second for me would be to not limit the number of players the coaches can work with in the offseason. By not allowing us to work with our players, we not only put Kansas kids at a great disadvantage in comparison to kids from other states, we also penalize the players and teams who want to work to get better. Further, allowing teams the chance to wear shoulder pads and helmets at the coach's camp (at school) would be a great benefit. All of these together would give Kansas athletes and teams more opportunities to improve and maximize their potential.

I would like our athletes to be able to at least wear helmets at our school’s summer camp. I think it would make our camp safer. During camp, many of our drills are full speed. We do a lot of scrimmaging during camp and there is an increased chance for injury when kids are flying around without helmets. Another benefit is that we would have an opportunity to adjust or change their helmets well before we start hitting at practice.
