Most nights, the best team wins. Nothing unexpected occurs, and both teams go home at the end of the night. But some games are etched memory by a late run, a last-second shot or an unfortunate foul call. What is the most memorable game you have ever been a part of?

 | While coaching at Ness City, the 2003 Class 1A state championship game ranks as probably the most memorable game I have been privileged to coach in. Leading by two with under a minute to go, we had to put together a defensive stand against a Centralia team loaded with three-point shooters. As Centralia worked the ball around to find an open shot, we had a player jump in the passing lane, steal the ball and dribble the length of the floor for a layup as time expired, securing a 34-30 victory and a state championship. |

 | While coaching at Clearwater for six years before coming to West High, one season we were picked to finish last in the league, and we ended up winning at Andover Central, which was ranked third or frouth in the state. We went to there place and beat them. We ran a zone against them, something they weren't expecting, and Jacob Laha had a great game for us. It was a big-time atmosphere - they'd just built a new facility.
More recently at West, we took Carroll to a two-point game last season. If we had won, it would have sent shockwaves through the state. We gained a lot of respect last year, along with the the one-point loss to Heights, another state tournament team like Carroll. |

 | My most memorable game that I have been a part of as a head coach was our game with Derby in February 2006. Derby was the No. 1 team in the state and undefeated. We were coming off a road victory at Carroll where one of our top players had broken his nose. This was our first home game in nearly a month and we had our best crowd in my time at Goddard. The game was tied until Pat McWhorter made two consecutive baskets, one off a steal, late in the fourth quarter. We were then able to take control and knock down several free throws down the stretch to seal the victory, handing Derby their first loss of the season. |
