Regular Season Nov 8, 2009

The KSHSAA Board of Directors voted in September to permit coaches in basketball, volleyball and football to coach their teams during an eight-week period over the summer, changing the previous rule which limited them to a week-long summer camp. Coaches can now organize practices and coach their teams at summer tournaments in these three main sports. How will you change your off-season coaching strategy in accordance with this rule change?

I think the new rule change will be great for the athletes and coaches of Kansas. My strategy for the summer will be to add team practices to the weightlifting and individual work we already do. Being able to work with everyone at the same time will be great for developing team chemistry with young players and adding to or adjusting our offensive and defensive sets. I also think it is important that the summer coaches stay involved with the athletes. I also would like to thank the administration for passing the new rule and giving us this opportunity.

I do like the fact they have limited it to a certain period of time and not the entire summer. Without this, it could lead to burnout of the coach, staff, and most important, the student-athlete. I believe this will make our athletes better at their sport, which hopefully will improve their opportunities to continue their sport after high school (scholarship opportunities). It will be imperative that coaches from all sports work together and be flexible with each other. I know our program will still encourage skill development to my players in the summer but will now be looking for opportunities to go to Team Camp and perhaps play in tournaments together hoping to improve "Team Play".

As educators we are told day in and day out to leave no child behind. Teachers state-wide have tried their hardest to reach thier students' full potential in the classroom. We are finally making steps to allow coaches to do the same. This rule is a positive step in that direction to model what we do as teachers. I would like to publicly thank all of the hard work that the Board of Directors, administrators and coaches have put into this rule change. Our kids are very dedicated at Derby High School to football, but I also know that I want them to have a chance to be a kid in the summer and enjoy their time off. This summer will be fun and at the same time a challenge to figure out what best benefits our student athletes and the team.

With this rule change, we now have a second season. It isn’t a mandatory season, but neither is Christmas break practices for the winter sports. So to keep up with other programs I will have to have practices during that six weeks as well as play is some type of tournaments. The girls basketball coach will have to do the same. Thank goodness we don’t have to share athletes – everyone knows that girl basketball players never play volleyball and volleyball players never play basketball, luckily for us. I feel sorry for any athlete that is a multisport participant, now having to attend several practices a day and tournaments/games in that six-week period. Maybe the athletes will just have to choose one sport and forget the rest. Most of all I will enjoy my summer break – I mean my two weeks in June.
