Over One-Half Century
Central Kansas
VYPE: What keeps you going after 54 years as a coach at the high school level?
Bill Means: I loved wjat I’m doing. I love to teach and coach, to see kids develop and go on and be successful. To look back and see them do well, that’s the greatest joy I have.
I’ve been very fortunate to have been around great people. I had very good mentors... More

Establishing the System
Central Kansas
HSSTM: Last fall was a banner season for the Goddard football program. After going 0-9 in your first season at Goddard in 2004, you led the Lions to Class 6A sub-state in 2007. What were some of the landmarks in the program’s progression to last season’s heights?
Roger Robben: The first year, we hit rock bottom by going 0-9, and there were a lot of things that were changing.... More

Another Option
Central Kansas
HSSTM: First, tell us a little bit about the sport, starting with its differences from American football.
Charles Ford: We have fifteen a side, football has eleven. We have no stoppages, except for injury or substitution. We don’t have specialty players who come in and off. Everybody plays offense, and everybody plays defense.
Britton Harper: No blocking, all passes are backwards, there’s an offsides.
If someone behind you kicks... More

Two and Counting
Central Kansas
HSSTM: Surprise question. I’m not going to ask you about Heights; instead, I’m going to ask about a school on the opposite side of town from Heights. You were a star at Campus High when they made the state title game in 1988. Surely you remember the game.
Kip Pulliam: It was a close game; we played Shawnee Heights. We’d been No. 1 all season. It came down to... More

Program Built
Central Kansas
Questions:
HSSTM: In the midst of your 13th season at Bishop Carroll, can you pick out a few major factors that turned this program into a perennial city and state contender?
Alan Schuckman: Consistency. I’ve had the same offensive and defensive coordinators for 13 years. Most of my staff has been the same from Day One. We’ve lost a few varsity coaches, but all three have left for... More

Coaching Connection
Central Kansas
Questions:
HSSTM: Coach Bribiesca, your Wichita Northwest squad in 1995 is the only Wichita area school to win a Class 6A state soccer title (in 1989, Wichita North won the title when there was one class). How do area schools become more competitive with teams from the Kansas City area that dominate at the state level?
BB: Ever since the state tournament started back in ’86, I have... More

A Winning Tradition
Central Kansas
HSSTM: Who have been some important mentors for you as a coach?
O’Hair: I coached under two coaches here in the Eighties – Dan Lawrence and Matt McKey. Dan was a great X’s and O’s guy. Matt McKey came in, and I coached with him for the last seven years that I was here (as an assistant). I learned a lot from him as far as motivating kids, team... More
