North Central, defending state team boys tennis champions, have quite a talent on the roster. Junior Jami Clark, 2007 All-State Honorable Mention, went 26-2 at No. 3 singles a year ago. This year, Clark has moved to No. 2 singles and makes a terrific 1-2 punch with sophomore Nick Chappell. We quizzed Jami, his mom, and his coach to find out who knows him best, because life is not just a forehand winner down the line.

A 5-foot-10 senior, Holly Wasmund knows how to set up her Avon volleyball teammates for success. Last season, Wasmund had 1,088 assists, 106 kills, 52 aces and 257 digs. The Orioles, preseason No. 7 in Class 4A, will depend on her setter skills throughout the 2008 season. We quizzed Holly, her dad and her assistant coach to find out who knows her best, as life is not as simple as a set and spike.

Although the staff at the magazine has never met her in person, all we hear is what a fine young lady Allie VandeWater really is. The Noblesville soccer midfielder was a 2007 First Team All-State selection by the Indiana Soccer Coaches Association, as well as the Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association. Not only that, she’s ranked in the top 10 percent of her class academically. Sounds good to us, so let’s quiz her mom and her coach to see who knows Allie best. Here’s a hint: it wasn’t really close.
Central Indiana

“While some players have to learn leadership, Allie possesses this trait innately – not only by the way she handles herself both on and off the field, but in how she treats other players and classmates,” says Noblesville coach Mike Brady. “Her soccer skill is tremendous, though I’d have to say it’s her compassion towards others that make her such a positive influence with her teammates, both at practice and...
Chanda Bell is just as highly regarded as any softball pitcher in the state, and she’s in the midst of closing out her career with a fine senior season. As we find out, the Franklin Central star is quite fond of warm weather as we quizzed her head coach and her pitching coach to see who knows Chanda best.
Central Indiana

“Chanda is one of the most remarkable kids I have had the opportunity to coach,” says Franklin Central coach Kathy Stricker. “She is not only an awesome softball player, but an awesome person!” ...
Lawrence North senior Traquincey Wilson is a dual threat for the Wildcats track team. The defending state long jump champion (23-feet, 6 inches) can fly on the track as well, his 10.75 third place finish in the 100-meter dash finals as proof. HSSTM quizzed Tra, his mom and his coach to see who knows him best, because life is not a short sprint.
Central Indiana

“Tra is a talented young man who has yet to reach his full potential,” says LN boys track coach Ken Browner. “Once he develops that mental drive to not let up he will be very hard to beat.” ...
Greenwood’s Corbin Mitchell had a solid state tournament as a junior, placing first at sectionals and tying for second at regionals individually. Now a senior, Mitchell hopes to improve upon his 36-hole state finals score of 151 (t-19) and lead the Woodmen back to a sectional title as a team. HSSTM quizzed Corbin, his mom and his coach to see who knows him best.
Central Indiana

“I really enjoy coaching Corbin because not only is he a great golfer who works hard at his game, but he’s a better person,” says Greenwood golf coach Rick Guipe. “He is a fine young man in a long line of great kids from our program.” ...
One name of a state champion you might not recognize is Becca Porter. As just a sophomore, the girls tennis standout at Center Grove won a doubles title with an undefeated record. Now a senior and four-year varsity player for the Trojans, HSSTM quizzed her mom and her coach to see who knows Becca best.
Central Indiana

"Becca is a dedicated player that is easy to coach," says Center Grove coach Debby Burton. "She gives 100 percent at all times and is committed to the team. Her skills on the court are outstanding and I am looking forward to what she will accomplish her senior season." ...
Lawrence Central captured the gymnastics title last year largely due to the performance of sophomore Jessie Leko, who finished fourth in the All-Around. Leko accumulated 37.3 points at the state meet, including a second place finish in the uneven bars and fifth place in the balance beam. Because not everything is a perfect dismount, HSSTM quizzed her mom and her coach to find out who knows Leko best.
Central Indiana

“Jessie has amazing talent in all events,” says Lawrence Central coach Michelle Post. “She is working on skills which should result in her placing higher in the All-Around this year.” ...
Last February, Westfield’s Ben Wachtel became the first swimmer in school history to win a state title at the IUPUI Natatorium – and he didn’t win just one title. Now a senior, Wachtel is back to defend his crown in both the 100- and 200-yard freestyles during next month’s state tournament. HSSTM quizzed his dad and his coach to see who knows Wachtel best.
Central Indiana

“Ben comes to practice every day with a positive attitude and a tremendous work ethic,” says Westfield swimming coach John Davis. “He sets a great example to our younger athletes about what it takes to succeed and reach the next level. He is going to continue to improve and will likely make big strides at the college level.” ...
This season, Beech Grove senior Renee Masterson has continued impressing on cross country courses all around Central Indiana. After finishing ninth at the state meet as a junior, Masterson’s senior campaign has included a first-place finish for the fourth straight year at the Whiteland Invite. With a run to the upcoming state meet looming, HSSTM quizzed her dad and her coach to see who knows Renee best.
Central Indiana

Coach quote: “Renee is naturally talented, but she also continues to push herself to new levels of success,” says Beech Grove girls cross country coach Cristen Cassler. “There is a passion and drive inside her that I can’t explain – it’s not only noticeable in her running, but also her high academic achievement and the way she reaches out to others around her.” ...
