Last month, the Franklin Central girls basketball program hosted its inaugural free-throw-athon fundraiser for Riley Hospital for Children's Pediatric Cancer Research Program. Girls basketball players from the high school team and Franklin Township Middle School East and West participated. Overall, 90 players and 15 coaches volunteered for the fundraiser. The players shot free throws and made cards for the kids in Riley's Pediatric Area, while parents and members of the community bid on silent auction items and bought tickets for a raffle. Some of the items donated for auction were Indiana Pacers tickets; Purdue Basketball packages, including a signed basketball, Purdue t-shirts and tickets for a Big Ten Conference game; educational books; gift certificates from St. Elmo Steak House and Family Video and baskets of beauty products. Cheyenne Whitamore, a cancer patient, and her family were honored as special guests for the evening. The event helped raise a total of $5,200.
