Highlighted games:
Roncalli (3-2) at Class 4A No. 6 Cathedral (3-2)
Cathedral is over .500 for the first time this season, following a 37-21 victory against Arlington last week. The Irish have recovered after losses to Carmel and St. Xavier (Ohio), with running back Nick Najeem and junior quarterback Kofi Hughes leading the way. Najeem ran for three touchdowns last week and Hughes rushed for 124 yards and 2 touchdowns as well. Should be a battle on the ground, as Roncalli saw senior running back Ben Polizzi rush for three touchdowns and tally 158 yards as the Rebels topped Scecina last week, 35-14. Ray Stallings and Brian Banta have been great in the secondary, so if Cathedral takes to the air, it could get interesting. These two schools have played in seven of the past 10 4A state title games and Cathedral leads the series by the narrowest of margins, 13-12. It’s a good bet that this is a precursor to a sectional showdown.
Class 5A No. 9 Southport (4-1) at Franklin Central (2-3)
Conference Indiana has seen a pair of schools give new meaning to the phrase upstarts. Lawrence Central (5-0) and ranked No. 6 in 5A is one. Number nine Southport is the other. The Cardinals have seen a remarkable turnaround and are looking for their fifth win in a season for the first time in 13 years, when they went 5-4 in 1995. The Cardinals are 3-0 in conference play.
Lawrence North (2-3) at Class 5A No. 3 Center Grove (4-1)
The host Trojans have always found the Wildcats to be an entertaining opponent: four of the last five games in the series have been decided by eight points or less, with two of those games in overtime. However, the Trojans have been on a roll since their loss to Carmel on Sept. 5, so that streak of close games could end tonight.
Mooresville (5-0) at Martinsville (2-3)
Mooresville, which many expected to suffer a down year following the loss of Trent Mossbrucker to graduation, is off to another 5-0 start for the second straight season. The Pioneers have looked very strong this fall and head coach Mark Bless will go after his 100th victory tonight against the Artesians in Mid State Conference play. Mooresville’s defense has been stingy, giving up just 5.6 points per game, and just three points in their last eight quarters.
