If you were to ask your friends and family, say, what their favorite month is, chances are you wouldn't get October for an answer very often.
In the grand scheme of things, it's easy to see how October could get lost in the mix: the reality of brisk temperatures sets in, the shuffle of homework, athletics and/or other activities becomes routine - and let's face it, it's still a little too early to be thinking about the holidays.
But in all fairness, the month of October has its upside as well. First and foremost, the 10th month in the calendar year marks, officially, the start of sweatshirt season. I know I'm not the only one partial to throwing on a hoodie and experiencing an overdose of pure comfort. Sunday afternoons in a sweatshirt are just about as good as it gets.
Another upside of October (and probably what first comes to mind for most people) is the outdoors. The colors are magnificent, to say the least, and a couple weekends of raking the lawn is soon in order (if not already).
On the field, while high school football season wraps up its regular season, the best part is yet to come. Of all stretches throughout the school year, football sectionals just might take the cake for best-of-the-best on the sports calendar.
As far as fans of high school sports are concerned, October has the potential to be a month to remember. We will be crowning state champions in boys and girls soccer, boys and girls cross country, and boys tennis - all while volleyball and football will undoubtedly be playing instant classics through sectionals and regionals.
And here at HSSTM, we have put together an October issue that will add to the excitement of this time of year. We've been out following some of the most interesting and dynamic athletes and teams throughout the area, including the talent-laden 2007 Carmel football team. And with soccer beginning postseason play, we give you a look inside the one player on the field allowed to use their hands - goalkeepers. Often overlooked, four area goalies get their due.
This month also includes Perry Meridian quarterback Adam Wiese's path to becoming the Falcons' leader, as well as the true personality of Zionsville dual-sport athlete Leah Einterz. In addition, we have Halloween costume suggestions, a helpful piece on balancing school and sports in Game Plan Youth and a guest column from ESPN football analyst Jim Barbar.
