A sneak peek at next month's Where Are They Now

On Aug. 23, at the Hall of Fame in New Castle, a reception has been planned that will recognize any official of either a boys or girls state finals, as well as all basketball officials.

Our good friend and contributing editor Bill Benner wrote a great "Where Are They Now?" piece for the upcoming September issue of VYPE High School Sports Magazine on former official Jimmy Dimitroff.

Dimitroff, who worked 30 regionals, 23 semistates and five state basketball finals, has been hard at work putting together an event that will recognize former officials. On Aug. 23, at the Hall of Fame in New Castle, a reception has been planned that will recognize any official of either a boys or girls state finals, as well as all basketball officials.

This was telling for the VYPE staff here, as we promote high school sports, because all too often the hard work of referees and officials go unnoticed - unless fans, coaches and players disagree with the calls they make.

But take a look at the photo attached with this story. You'll find Dimitroff (in some unknown decade, at some unknown locale) resting his weary body following a recently officiated game. Check out the athletic tape surrounding his left ankle, the towel slung over his neck - you'll find someone who's as passionate about his role in the game as the players and coaches on the floor most assuredly were.

Be sure to pick up a copy of the September 2008 edition of VYPE for more on Dimitroff and his amazing story.
