It was a shootout Monday at The Legends of Indiana in Franklin, where No. 2 Martinsville and No. 3 Avon tied with a 315 to win the Center Grove Invitational, The Trojan Classic. It took a fourth-player tiebreaker to determine the winner.

Top ranked Hamilton Southeastern finished third with a 318.

Sixth-ranked Noblesville continued to improve their scores, this time against some of the state’s best girls golf teams, to finish ninth by carding a 330 team total.

A loaded and talented field always draws attention to this early season tournament, which often showcases some of the top teams in the state. Twenty-one teams competed this year, including 12 of the top 14 ranked teams in the state.

Columbus North’s Taylor Gohn won individual medalist winners, carding a 68 on one of the tougher courses in the state.

Carmel’s Ari Savich posted a 69 to finish runner-up.

Noblesville senior Meghan Potee shot a 72, as did teammate Emily Podzielinski, to tie for third individually with Avon’s Breanna Patz.

Almost a dozen golfers finished below 80 on the day. Martinsville, HSE and Carmel showed strong depth, while No. 5 Roncalli carded a 333 – keeping the Rebels in the discussion of the state’s top challengers.

The Legends of Indiana in Franklin is home of the state championship meet each year and also hosts the Johnson County Match today at 3:30 p.m.

Another showdown looms on Aug. 30 at Forest Hills, site of the Hall of Fame Classic.
