When it comes to the boys tennis hard court, Central Indiana rules. Since 1972-73, only four teams have captured the team state championship from outside of Marion and the nine surrounding counties that make up our local community. And since 2000, all the state champs have come from the area: North Central (2000, 2008); Center Grove (2001); Park Tudor (2002, '06); Carmel (2003-04); Cathedral (2005). So heading into the 2008 boys tennis season, it's a question of which local team will come out on top in the dangerous regionals. Defending state champion North Central, which went undefeated (26-0) last fall and defeated Culver 5-0 in the state title match, returns Nick Chappell and Jami Clark, who will carry the Panthers to another successful season. But watch out for Carmel and Center Grove. The two MIC schools have been slowly building a reservoir of talented ball strikers. Carmel returns young stars Michael Moe, Eric Murphy and Travis Mandrell, while CG brings back Austin Sansone, Caleb Fellers and the doubles team of David Schoch and Justin Spicer. Park Tudor has put itself back in contention since its last title in 2006 behind Sam Miles and the doubles duo of Dan Tapiero and Kishan Shah. It will be exciting to watch the 2008 season unfold and which of these teams comes out on top - or to see if an unexpected school makes a run at the team crown. PLAYERS TO WATCH FOR THIS FALL: DALTON ALBERTIN (Lawrence Central) - A senior, Albertin finished runner-up in No. 1 singles at state last fall with a 20-5 record. NICK CHAPPELL (North Central) - Just a sophomore, Chappell was nipped by Albertin for a spot in the singles title match. JAMI CLARK (North Central) - A junior, named Honorable Mention All-State. CHARLIE HURST (Brebeuf) - A junior and fantastic doubles player; part of Brebeuf's state finals No. 1 doubles team. DOUG BARNARD (Brebeuf) - All District in 2007. KENT AUSTIN (Roncalli) - Junior was a regional qualifier last fall. MICHAEL MOE (Carmel) - All-District as a freshman in 2007. AUSTIN WOLDMORE (Hamilton Southeastern) - Sophomore was named All-District last season SAM MILES (Park Tudor) - has a chance at a state title as a junior this season. ERIC MURPHY (Carmel) TRAVIS MANDRELL (Carmel) - Junior was All-District last fall. AUSTIN SANSONE (Center Grove) TREVOR COX (Greenwood) JONATHAN KERSEY (Greenwood) CALEB FELLERS (Center Grove) DAN TAPIERO / KISHAN SHAH (Park Tudor) - Dynamic doubles team could make a run at state this year. NICK LACONI / J.P. DWYER (Zionsville) - Pair of juniors should advance deep into state tournament. ZACH SHERWOOD / JOSH AMRHEIN (Franklin Central) - Juniors will look to advance far in state tourney at No. 1 doubles. Singles players earned two points for their school for every victory, while doubles teams earned three points for their school with every win. The school with the most accumulated points at the conclusion of each level of the tournament -- sectional, regional and state finals -- was declared the team champion. The winning individual(s) that advanced through the entire tournament were honored as singles state champions and doubles state champions. Beginning in 1974-75, the team format that is used today was introduced, which called for three singles players and two doubles teams from each school to play head-to-head (each victory worth one point) to determine the winning team. From 1974-75 through 1979-80, the tournament did not crown an individual as the singles state champion as it had in previous years and the same was true for doubles teams from 1974-75 through 1989-90. In 1980-81, a separate tournament for No. 1 singles players was initiated and in 1990-91, a tournament for No. 1 doubles teams began. Both of those tournament formats are still used today.
