Central Indiana, IN

VYPE takes a look at the upcoming Class A football season on a local level, with teams and players to watch for this fall.

Any and all discussion regarding a Class A front runner in 2008 has to revolve around Sheridan. The Blackhawks would earn that right in anyway, considering that Bud Wright’s boys have won three straight state titles.

Any and all discussion regarding a Class A front runner in 2008 has to revolve around Sheridan. The Blackhawks would earn that right in anyway, considering that Bud Wright’s boys have won three straight state titles.

But it doesn’t hurt when your star player is a Mr. Football candidate and has lost less than 5 games in his high school career. Senior Nick Zachery, an Indiana University commit, returns to guide Sheridan at quarterback and defensive back. The Blackhawks have won nine state titles overall and enter the 2008 season on a 30-game winning streak that dates back to the 2006 season.

Bud Wright will look to pad his lead as the state’s winnigest active football coach, with a 338-144 record heading into this season – a winning percentage over 70.

Sheridan will face a challenge in its quest to repeat, namely state runner-up Rockville and terrific senior quarterback Matt King.

Yet locally, Ritter (10-4, lost to Rockville in ’07 semistate) has reloaded for another run at a state championship (the Raiders lost to Sheridan in the Dome in 2006) and will be a preseason top 5 team. Senior wide receiver Tyrone Walker will be quite the handful for a number of teams this season, coming off a stellar junior campaign where he caught 74 balls for 1,355 yards and 12 touchdowns.

And watch out for Scecina (5-6 in 2007) and Indiana School for the Deaf, both of whom finished in the top 20 according to the Saragin ratings at the end of the 2007 season.

Scecina had one of the tougher schedules in the state last season and will face four 3A opponents and two 4A opponents this fall.

Indiana School for the Deaf went 9-3 last season, falling to perennial powerhouse Ritter in the Sectional 37 title game.

Guerin Catholic and Lutheran will also be teams to watch for this season. Guerin went 4-8 a season ago, but advanced to the Sectional 36 title against Sheridan last fall. Lutheran went 5-6 in 2007.

PLAYERS TO WATCH FOR

NICK ZACHERY (Sheridan) – A four-year starter, Zachery doesn’t lose. He’s led the Blackhawks to three consecutive state titles. A Junior All-State selection, Zachery passed for 835 yards and five touchdowns last season. But it’s his shifty moves while carrying the ball that draw most of the attention. Zachery ran for 2,182 yards and 43 touchdowns. Yes, 43 TDs (you read that right). If that’s not enough, Mr. Everything plays safety, kicker, punter and is a valuable return man (as evidenced by his performance in the state title game last November.

TYRONE WALKER (Ritter) – Great hands and speed; Walker had over 1,000 receiving yards last season.

BRETT HUME (Sheridan) – Hume, a senior, is a solid linebacker that hits hard.

TY PERKINS (Sheridan) – A defensive back, he was sorely missed after an injury forced him out of the title game last November. Now a senior, Perkins is an invaluable piece to the Blackhawks mission of another state title.
