Of the Central Indiana teams that advanced to state finals last fall, Class 3A Brebeuf seems the most logical to repeat that performance again this fall, bringing back quite a bit of talent from a team that finished 26-10 a season ago, falling to eventual state 3A champion Bellmont in the state semifinals.

In Class 4A, Carmel made a terrific run to state in 2007 and finished the year 29-9, falling to Elkhart Memorial in four-set heart breaker in the state semifinals.

This season, however, should find many other Central Indiana teams in the mix for a state crown in early November.

In Class 4A, Avon returns a ton of talent, including senior Katie Griffin, who will play for Purdue next fall. Griffin set the school career record for blocked shots as a freshman – which should tell you something. Last fall, she had 246 digs and 445 kills. Senior teammate Holly Wasmund returns. Wasmund had 1,088 assists as a setter last year.

Other teams to keep an eye on in 2008:

Hertiage Christian – The Eagles and senior Kelly Faris have found the same formula of success as found on the hardwood during basketball season. Faris, a UConn basketball commit, is a two-sport threat, tallying 312 kills and 391 digs last season.

Cathedral – Seniors Mary Ording and Christiana Gray return to a team poised to make a trip back to the state finals, where the Irish claimed the 4A crown in 2006.

THE FINE 15: PLAYERS TO WATCH FOR THIS FALL:

LAUREN RAFDAL (BREBEUF) – A 6-foot-2 outside hitter, Rafdal tallied 404 kills and 306 digs to guide the Braves to the state finals last fall.

KATIE GRIFFIN (AVON) – 6-2 outside hitter, had 56 blocks, 60 aces to complement 246 digs and 445 kills a season ago.

HILARY EPPINK (WESTFIELD) – A Notre Dame commit, this senior had 400 kills, 140 blocks and 79 digs in 2007.

HOLLY WASMUND (AVON) – A 5-10 setter, Wasmund tallied 106 kills, 52 aces, 257 digs and 1,088 assists last season.

KELLY FARIS (HERITAGE CHRISTIAN) – 312 kills and 391 digs while leading the Eagles to sectional title.

MARY ORDING (CATHEDRAL) – A 6-3 senior and middle blocker, Ording tallied 219 kills, 128 blocks last fall.

BECCA REIDY (CHATARD) – Just a junior, Reidy had 486 kills and 179 blocks last season.

JENNY CONLEY (CENTER GROVE) – Conley had 143 kills, 238 digs and 30 aces last season for the Trojans.

ALEXIS WAUGH (RONCALLI) – Only a sophomore, Waugh accounted for 916 assists and 71 blocks for the Rebels as a setter.

LINSDAY SPEARS (PERRY MERIDIAN) – A junior, Spears accumulated 272 kills and a .430 hitting percentage in 2007, adding 141 blocks to boot.

ANN WHITED (INDIANA SCHOOL FOR THE DEAF) – A 5-7 forward, Whited tallied 220 kills and 143 aces – 1.7 aces per game – a season ago.

WHITLEY EMERSON (SPEEDWAY) – A senior and back row staple, Emerson accounted for 339 kills, 40 aces and 325 digs last fall.

MADDIE REESE (PARK TUDOR) – A junior setter, Reese had 747 assists, 57 digs and 47 aces in 2007.
