COACHING MOVES Dee Dee Galligher is the new volleyball coach at Lawrence North, replacing Pat Carlson (who took the head job at Perry Meridian). Galligher was an assistant and JV coach for one year before taking over as the head varsity coach at University for the past two years. After leading University to back-to-back winning seasons, Galligher stepped down. Spencer Fields has stepped down as the boys and girls tennis coach at perennial power North Central. Fields led the boys program to state titles in 2000 and 2007 during his nine seasons, while coaching the girls the past two seasons. John Hahn has been named the new baseball coach at Pike after spending last season as an assistant at Franklin. Hahn also previously coached at Jennings County and Paoli. T.J. Lambert has stepped down after three seasons as softball coach at Cathedral, making way for the return of Ed Roessler. Roessler led the Irish to the 2001 state finals in Class 3A during a previous stint that ended with a 69-33 record. LYNN INKS DEAL WITH CARDINALS Lance Lynn, a former Brownsburg and University of Mississippi standout pitcher, was selected 39th overall by the St. Louis Cardinals in the Major League Baseball Draft as a supplemental pick between the first and second rounds. Lynn, who completed his junior season at Ole Miss last spring, signed a contract with St. Louis and is pitching for the Cardinals' Class-A affiliate in Batavia, N.Y. RECRUITING NEWS Ben Davis junior Dee Dee Williams, who averaged 6.5 points, 4.2 rebounds and 3.9 assists for the Giants' girls basketball team, has made a commitment to play hoops collegiately at Purdue in 2010. Four local seniors have committed to play for the University of Cincinnati football program: Ben Davis defensive lineman Jordan Stepp, Whiteland linebacker Mitch Meador and Pike teammates Dakotah Tyler (safety) and Andre Cureton (offensive lineman). Sheridan football star Nick Zachery will be staying in-state after his recent oral commitment to Indiana University. Zachery, who has led the Blackhawks to three consecutive Class 1A state titles, was recruited as an athlete and could play a number of different positions for the Hoosiers. Carmel offensive lineman Brooks Michel made an oral commitment to join the University of Minnesota football program. Michel, who stands 6-7 and weighs 285 pounds, is a senior this season. Defensive tackle Chris Jones of Brownsburg made an oral commitment to play for Bowling Green next fall. The 6-3, 285-pound Jones was a Class 5A honorable mention All-State as a junior last season. Fishers outfielder/infielder Erik Salas signed a letter of intent to attend Ancilla Junior College. FORMER MR. FOOTBALL EMERGES Darren Evans, 2006 Warren Central graduate and Indiana Mr. Football, is the leading candidate to become the featured running back at Virginia Tech this fall, espn.com reports. Evans will be a redshirt freshman this season for the Hokies, who were ranked No. 20 on espn.com's preseason poll on June 25. McCARTY GOES TO POLAND D'Ana McCarty, a 2007 Pike graduate and May 2007 cover girl, competed in the World Junior Track and Field Championships from July 8-13 in Bydgoszcz, Poland. The University of Louisville sophomore qualified by finishing runner-up in the hammer throw at the USA Outdoor Championships held in Columbus, Ohio. LOCALS FARE WELL IN OLYMPIC TRIALS Center Grove and Indiana University graduate Kevin Swander advanced to the men's 100-meter breaststroke after posting a semifinal time of 1:01.27. Carmel graduate and University of Arizona swimmer Taylor Baughman placed 38th in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:00.80.
