Central Indiana, IN

Monday, June 23, 2008

There was a plethora of exciting high school sports action this weekend. Here's a look at what happened around the area: TRACK The under-20 Junior Track and Field Championships at Columbus, Ohio took place over the weekend. Warren Central graduate Candyce McGrone finishing fourth in the 200-meter dash on Sunday, with a time of 23.84 (headwind). In the women's 3,000 meters, Culver grad Alex Banfich was third with a time of 9:56.94. Purdue sophomore and Westfield graduate Kristina Krasich was sixth in 10:17.09. Warren Central grad Derrick Spight tied for sixth in the high jump, leaping 6 feet, 8 and 3/4 inches. FOOTBALL Carmel quarterback Morgan Newton, who will be a senior this fall, announced last week he has a list of eight schools he will choose from before making his college commitment. Indiana, Purdue and Kentucky are among the final eight for Newton, who guided the Greyhounds to a 13-2 mark last season and the 5A state title last fall. Illinois, Florida, Clemson, Miami, Fl. and South Carolina are also on the list. Newton has received nearly 20 scholarship offers, all interested in the services of the multi-dimensional signal caller, who threw for 1,883 yards and 25 touchdowns and an additional 750 yards and 11 TDs on the ground last season. Fellow Carmel teammate Brooks Michael, a 6-foot-7, 285-pound offensive tackle, also announced he has narrowed his choice to Minnesota and North Carolina State. SOFTBALL During Saturday's Indiana All-Star doubleheader at Ben Davis, New Pal's Alyssa Marcum had two RBIs to guide the South to a 5-4 victory in the second game, avenging an 8-5 loss to the North in first game. McCutcheon senior Tori Collins was awarded the title of Miss Softball and threw two scoreless innings in the first game. Collins had a 22-3 record with a .66 ERA and 245 strikeouts on the season, guiding the Mavericks to the Class 4A state title. SOCCER New Palestine's Alyssa Merrick scored two goals and Carmel's Emma Gormley had a shutout in the first half of Saturday's girls soccer All-Star Classic at Warren Central to lead the North squad to a 5-2 win. Cathedral's Colleen McGrath added an assist, while Chatard's Chelsea Burns added a goal. Gormley, who kept the South stars at bay for the first 40 minutes of the game, was awarded the defensive MVP honors in a game highlighting the skills of recent high school graduates. Avon's Kaitlyn Blacha gave the South squad their first goal in the 66th minute of the game. Center Grove grad Lacey Hersman scored the South's other goal 11 minutes later.

Newton's recruitment is going to get absolutely crazy this fall. With such a wide variety of locations and styles at his potential school, it will be really interesting to see what happens in the end.
