When I think May, I think fresh. The air is fresh. The pristine green grass is fresh. The burgers, steaks and shish kabobs coming off the grill are fresh. What great thoughts, right? Well, we here at HSSTM think so. In this month's issue, we did our best to be fresh. We're trying some new things in the pages ahead, just like most issues as we learn and grow, but this one a little bit more than most. Perhaps you noticed when you picked up this copy, but one area getting a new look is the cover (quick, if you didn't notice, take one more peek). For the first 13 issues of this publication, we went with more of a photo shoot/portrait type of look. Just to throw a change-up (no pun intended), we're pleased to finally feature a game action shot on our cover. What do you think? Feel free to let us know by e-mailing letters.centralindiana@hsstm.com. We're hoping that action shots on the cover become more a part of our repertoire as we move forward. Another fresh perspective this May can be seen in our Features section, where we're delighted to highlight incredible student-athletes from two schools that have yet to be covered in these pages - Waldron and Eminence. Starting on page 46 you'll see and read about "Miss Everything" at Waldron, the one and only Sharon Jackson. And the following feature, starting on page 50, we are pleased to introduce one of the most polite and determined young ladies we have come across since the start - Eminence's Dani Merrick. Speaking of Merrick, one of the last noticeably fresh things we have to offer this month is shining some light on a few young faces around our area. We don't typically devote a lot of space to freshmen in this magazine, simply because there are so many deserving upperclassmen that won't be competing much longer, but the stories of Merrick and Patrick Rodgers, a freshman golfer at Avon, were too good to pass up. As you flip the pages, you will also see pieces on Hamilton Southeastern three-sport queen Brett Williams, a racing story (this is May in Indy, come on) written by the notable Derek Daly and much, much more. Enjoy the fresh outlook this spring, get outside and support our local high school athletes.
