While most fall sports are just getting started in late August, your teams are often at the midway point. Since there is such a focus on individual play over the summer, how do you get your girls to focus on the team when the season begins? What are your points of emphasis?

To get the girls to start coming together as a team, we start meeting twice a week and playing in the evenings. This allows them to still enjoy their summer, but also to start getting in the right frame of mind. Points of emphasis are the short game and putting. They have all summer to go out and try to hit the long ball to their hearts content, but taking strokes off their score comes in these two areas. It also helps them come together as a team, when they are focusing on the same areas.

By the nature of the game itself, golf is not a team sport. It is an individual sport, as we all know. However, the importance is still there for a team atmosphere. An integral part of the game is to be confident in what you are doing on the course and team support, both before and during a match, can make a significant difference to an individual's performance. We make sure, from the beginning of the season, that all the girls get familiar with one another. We do that through strategic pairings during our practice rounds so that a freshman will play with juniors, seniors and so on. We also encourage team unity at school functions, such as the golf team Homecoming Parade participation and at other in-school events.

We have a golf team camp where we drill and play 18 holes every day. This gives us a chance to meet new team members, for me to get to know the new girls and get re-acquainted with girls from last year. High school golf is a team and an individual sport all in one, similar to wrestling, swimming and tennis. We can do team building exercises this week and we do other things throughout the season both to "take the edge off" and to build team spirit. I also give out "Daily Positive Reminders" to the girls every practice and meet throughout the season.

In order to build a feeling of “team†among the girls, we encourage them to play similar tournaments over the summer so they can have that common experience. During the past few years, we have also participated in a variety of fundraisers. This gets the team working together for a common purpose before getting on the course. In addition, we ask the girls to help out at a weeklong kids golf camp. This event serves many purposes and gets younger kids excited about the sport.
