During sectionals and regionals, how do you prepare your team for opponents on short notice? In other words, what are your focal points when there’s often 24 to 48 hours (or less sometimes) between games?
During sectionals and regionals, how do you prepare your team for opponents on short notice? In other words, what are your focal points when there’s often 24 to 48 hours (or less sometimes) between games?
Bob Carter
Mooresville Basketball
When preparation time is shortened, I try and focus on two or three main points of emphasis. We tell our team – all the time – that if we can win two of the three, we’ve got a good chance of winning the game. I also think it’s just as important to focus on your own team, making sure you are doing what you do well. Often times, players have a tendency to overlook the basic fundamentals in search of an extraordinary performance. A solid performance, within the basic fundamentals of basketball, will most often win you big games.

We have assistants working ahead on future scouting reports of possible future opponents, so as soon as we know who we are playing, we are prepared to start working on them. We also play three double weekends (Friday and Saturday) during the year to try and get us ready for having to play Friday and Saturday night in the sectional.
Pete Smith
Guerin Catholic Basketball
Since we were moved this season from Class 2A Sectional 43 to Sectional 40, we are in a very unique situation this year. We will have not played a team in the sectional during the regular season. We will have a one-page scouting report already prepared on each team to give to the players in the sectional. We will give our players a copy of it and review it with them. But I mainly stress to our team when the turnaround time is so short that our opponent has to worry about us, and if we play to our strengths and execute what we want to do, that is all I can ask of them.
Joe Leonard
Fishers Basketball
We try and keep track of sectional opponents all throughout the year. Most of our opponents we will have already played earlier in the regular season. At that point, we can look at game film of those previous matchups, as well as try to get film of our opponent’s last couple games. But our main focal point will always be trying to get better at what we do.
